Advance Care Planning ‘F Words’: Faith, Family, and Fatphobia

Advance care planning is an important, ongoing process that many Americans need to begin but lack the skills to get started. Barriers to completion are vast, but many struggle to begin because of uncertainty around several factors, including family history, identity, bias, and faith.

Aging services professionals, healthcare professionals, death doulas, and others in a person’s circle of care have a unique opportunity to open the door for these discussions.

We will highlight barriers to advance care planning and three of the critical “F words” that may arise: faith, family, and fatphobia. Sharing frameworks and insights from research and bedside experience, we will highlight some of the ways these themes can be incorporated into the discussion safely and with care.

Participants in the webinar will be able to:
– Share two barriers to advance care planning in America.
– Describe how a professional’s bias can impact a person’s end-of-life experience.
– Access at least one resource that can be downloaded and used to support these discussions within their workplace.
