The Island Crematorium on Rocky Island in Ireland is unique in its fantastic location as well as its modern approach to cremation, memorial, and grieving. The crematorium is designed for religious or non-religious services; it has spiritual as well as communal spaces, plus a refreshments room!

Situated on Cork Harbour facing the open Atlantic Ocean, the building on Rocky Island was constructed in 1808 to store barrels of gunpowder. Its size and narrow mouth made it an ideal place for refuge and defense for the English naval fleet at the time. After Irish independence in 1923, the dockyard of the island was handed over to Ireland, and the remainder followed in 1938. The Island Crematorium Company purchased the island in 2005.

The spectacular structure combines the aged beauty of the 200-year-old building and the sleekness of contemporary design:

I love this design. It would be great if all crematoriums had friendly designs like this.

Sad this is in Ireland and not a place for use in the U.S. it has a nice patina of time to the building that feels right.
